Pamplemousse adjusted his goggles as he floated near the sinking mass of Sea Mauville, waiting the volunteer that had been assigned as his partner to arrive. Debris drifted around him in a tangled mess: uprooted trees, barely-floating storage sheds, rusty barrels with illegible labels, and all sorts of detritus from the derelict rig. Dipping his head below the water, he could see the situation below the surface was the same.[break][break]

He released Jack's Sharpedo into the water, admiring the intimidating curve of her dorsal fin before giving his command. "Push the debris out of the way so we have a clear dive path."[break][break]

The pokemon's fin knifed through the waters as it pushed the floating objects away with the aid of its aqua jet. Before long, it had disappeared below the water to clear the dive path as well.

The smell of salt and brine stung at GIDEON GRAVES's nostrils, filling them with a caustic air that traveled through his body and settled in his bones. It was an uneasy feeling — amplified even more so as he arrived to Sea Mauville and the stretch of decimated, filthy ocean he'd been assigned to. [break][break]

"Jack Wainwright?" The professor called out across the waves, a SLOWKING at his side as he approached the only other person in their vicinity. [break][break]

"Dr. Gideon Graves, but Gideon is fine. Nice to meet you." He extended a hand for a brief greeting, getting formalities out of the way so that could begin their work. Time was precious, after all, and every minute that passed saw the sun sinking closer toward the horizon. [break][break]

"Go ahead and help, Proteus." Perking up, the SLOWKING slipped into the water and began using its PSYCHIC powers to clear a path for the two men to safely dive.[break][break]

Turning back to jack wainwright, Gideon admitted with a halfhearted smile, "This is my first time volunteering for this position. What exactly are we salvaging for?"

Pamplemousse rotated in the water as he heard someone call out Jack's name. He appraised the man as he approached, uncertain of the capabilities of his assigned partner for the operation.[break][break]

"Pleased to meet you, Gideon," Pamplemousse said in a tone that was unclear the man felt anything at all. "Thank you for volunteering to assist, there's a lot of work that needs done here." This he said with conviction, nodding his head as he spoke.[break][break]

Watching the Slowking deftly shift debris with his mind, Pamplemousse nodded appreciatively. Their dive path would quickly be cleared out. He turned back to his volunteer.[break][break]

"Our assignment today is to recover a set of pokemon fossils that were on display at Sea Mauville. The report indicated that they were stored in some kind of structure that sank but it is unclear what the state of that structure is or if the fossils are even intact. We will need to dive down to the sea floor and recover the fossils."[break][break]

He hesitated, casting another assessing look at the Doctor. Uncertain if Gideon was a medical doctor or the kind of doctor that spent all day in a lab or library, he added, "They're just fossils and not worth putting yourself in danger for. If the structure is unstable or inaccessible, we will resurface and report them as lost."[break][break]

"Are you ready to go?" Pamplemousse asked as Jack's Sharpedo returned from the work of clearing debris.

The mention of fossils piqued Gideon's interest. [break][break]

"Really?" He asked, wading closer to jack wainwright. "Perhaps I'll reach out to whoever was overseeing the collection once we've recovered them." [break][break]

Proteus returned with the other man's SHARPEDO as he continued, "I wouldn't mind housing the fossils at the Natural History Museum temporarily until an appropriate facility is found." Glancing over at the wreckage that was Sea Mauville, Gideon thought it unlikely that the place would be used as it had been any time soon. [break][break]

With both Pokémon at their sides and a way down cleared, GIDEON GRAVES solemnly nodded his head at the ranger's warning. [break][break]

He did have some experience from field work over the years, but this would likely be the most dangerous dive GIDEON GRAVES had ever done. Still, the professor was confident that he wouldn't make a fool out of himself, at least. [break][break]

"Ready." He affirmed, adjusting his goggles over his eyes. "I'll follow your lead."

Nodding solidly to Gideon, Pamplemousse adjusted his diving equipment and suppressed a sigh of relief. Gideon seemed like he understand their purpose and wouldn't pull any shit that got them killed. Pamplemousse didn't care what happened to the fossils if they got them back, but it was somehow fulfilling to know Gideon might be able to get them a ptemporary home. Hopefully this wouldn't all be for nothing.[break][break]

Grabbing onto Jack's Sharpedo, he let the pokemon pull him beneath the water. He did his best to moderate their speed to something that Gideon could keep up with, rather than the Sharpedo's usual breakneck pace. The sunken facility quickly came into view, more like a set of shipping containers than a true building. Besides resting slightly askew on the sea floor, it appeared mostly intact.[break][break]

He approached the doorway when something boomed within the deep as another part of Sea Mauville failed. A group of Chewtle, led by a Dreadnaw fled from the noise and directly into their path.[break][break]

"Gideon, break through that door while I hold these pokemon off," Pamplemousse said sharply into the diving suit's communicator device, his voice sounding tinny in his own ears.[break][break]

The Sharpedo came around to face the frenzied group of fleeing pokemon. Her mouth opened as her eyes pulled into a wicked grin that matched the razor sharp teeth displayed in a scary face.

With Proteus acting as a quasi-ferryman, GIDEON GRAVES followed jack wainwright and his SHARPEDO down into the depths. All was going smoothly until a nearby concussive force alerted to some sort of disturbance.[break][break]

Seconds later multiple wild Pokémon emerged from the gloom, seemingly startled by the commotion or possibly enraged by their intrusion. Likely both, if Gideon had to guess. Still, Jack kept his cool and instructed him on what to do.[break][break]

"On it." The professor replied, trying to mimic the ranger's demeanor. He wasn't sure if it was a passable performance.[break][break]

Waving his hand at Proteus and then motioning toward the door, the SLOWKING understood that this was an urgent matter — using his PSYCHIC powers, rusty bolts released themselves and floated into the darkness before the metal door was pried from its hinges.[break][break]

"We're clear!" Gideon alerted over their comms, already swimming toward the threshold.

The group of Snapping Pokemon recoiled at the Sharpedo's scary face but did not flee. The smaller ones retreated into shells while the Dreadnaw simply backed up a few meters. Still, it was enough for Gideon's Slowking to get the door open.[break][break]

Pamplemousse used the opportunity to make a quick escape, latching on to Jack's Sharpedo as an aqua jet sent them slicing through the water and into the opening the Gideon had provided.[break][break]

"Nice work, Doctor," Pamplemousse praised the man, impressed at his speed and ingenuity under pressure. Then he gave himself a slight shake. His purpose wasn't to give praise, it was to get the fossils and get out.[break][break]

Flicking on the underwater lamp attached to his diving mask, he scanned the light across the room. Many of the displays about Hoenn's natural phenomenon and native pokemon had broken open and spilled their contents into the room, covering the floor in debris. Smaller objects floated silently in the eerie light of his headlamp.[break][break]

Passing the light across a directory hanging on the wall next to the entryway, Pamplemousse asked his partner, "Any idea where they would keep fossils? We don't have time to sift through this entire mess."

"That was a close one!"[break][break]

GIDEON GRAVES’s heart was nearly beating out of his chest. Adrenaline coursed through him, pushing him through the threshold of the eerie ship and away from their wild Pokémon encounter. [break][break]

Though out of danger — for now — the professor wasn't exactly calmed by what he saw within the mirky waters within. jack wainwright's headlamp, along with his own, revealed a dilapidated scene. It was difficult to piece together what this room had even been.[break][break]

"Legitimate fossils wouldn't be displayed where the public can view them," He explained, examining the directory beside his partner. "Those are usually casts. The fossils we're looking for would be kept in some sort of climate-controlled storage facility... here!"[break][break]

Gideon pointed to an area labeled COLLECTIONS on the map.[break][break]

"It doesn't seem too far... but we'll need to go deeper into the ship."

Looking at the map and mentally routing himself through the ship, Pamplemousse felt a flicker of annoyance that the real fossils would be hidden away. What was their purpose: to be studied in locked rooms or displayed from the people of Hoenn to be enriched by? For a moment he felt uncertain.[break][break]

Nodding to Gideon, he headed through a nearby doorway on the quickest route to the Collections room. They encountered no pokemon but due their progress was considerably slowed due to the state of the sunken facility. Even with the help of Sharpedo and Slowking, they spent more time clearing obstacles than actually making forward progress. By the time they reached the door to Collections, Pamplemousse's 25% warning was flashing.[break][break]

The door was already warped from the facility's rapid descent to the sea floor so Sharpedo opened it with a quick slash.[break][break]

"We've got enough oxygen to make a grab and head back to the surface. If you want to turn back, you need to do it now, otherwise let's grab what we can and go."
